I think the reason that pain in children is under-recognised and undertreated is mostly due to the child’s communication skills, especially with smaller children. Health care workers might also be too scared to administer analgesics in proper dosages due to a lack of knowledge and being scared that they will overdose the child. You cannot just ask a child about their pain; you will need to assess it properly by using the appropriate pain rating scale that we have learned in this course.
The health care worker will also need to do proper education with the family or main carer, because if they don’t understand the specific child’s pain management program, they might give lower dosages at home due to fear of over administering.
