In our ICU is a 10 year old admitted who was completely well until August, living in JHB in a medium income family, going to a good school and having an active social life. She then had hallucinations, could not speak anymore and started to have movement disorder. The doctor in Johannesburg told the family he does not know what is going on. The family then sent the child to the Eastern Cape, London to the maternal grandmother, who then took her only a week later to the traditional healer and when her symptoms did not improve brought her to the hospital. At first we could not understand and were angry about that why a family who is well off would send her child to the deprived Eastern Cape when they could get help in one of the good government hospitals in JHB, but then understood that they had hoped she could be healed by a traditional healer….
