In the context within which I work, getting to the hospital for appointments and treatment collections can be of great cost to families so as the MDT we try and ensure:
      1) The appointments are coordinated so the child and their families can come back to see the therapists, doctors and collect medication and treatment on the same day. From a rehabilitation team perspective, we try and ensure that the child gets seen by all MDT members at the same time to streamline communication, goal setting, planning and management as much as possible.
      2) Admitted a child an their caregiver to our ‘Siyaphila’ ward for a weeklong block therapy, again to aim for intensive therapy and input while decreasing the number of unnecessary trips a child and their family would have to make to the hospital.

Im at a public hospital in Stanger, KZN and it is also of great cost to our families to adhere to appointments – our MDT also try to coordinate appointments and treatment collection. Our MDT also try to find the nearest clinic where the child can access rehab therapy.
We are considering admitting children for a day or two so that all the MDT has more time for rehab – a week seems like a good idea!
