Occupational therapists are specialists in the assessment of basic abilities (cognition, motor, emotional) developmental stages and functional abilities of children and adolescents. It will be wonderful if all children’s palliative care settings could have an OT on their team.
As a music therapist, my assessments involve playing and making music with the patient and/or their family. The assessment is part of my thinking throughout treatment and I observe, feel, take note of where the child/family is during each session, with regards to especially emotional, social and spiritual but also developmental and functional performance. Recording and taking these observations to team meetings is important for planning and performing a holistic treatment.
Each team member has an important and unique contribution.
