Generally speaking, I think teamwork in healthcare is a lot more challenging than anticipated. One can have big ideas and aspirations, but at the end of the day, one can only hope that your colleagues will share these.

One of my biggest challenges has been working with colleagues who are generally unhappy in their line of work, for various reasons. There is often a sentiment of just getting through the day and only doing what is absolutely required. This can make it very difficult to have a healthy and effective team dynamic if multiple team members are fundamentally dissatisfied with their profession or working environment. This is a bigger issue that cannot necessarily be addressed by the team, but requires management, HR, occupational health etc.

Healthcare is really tough, and so many healthcare professionals are struggling with the demands. In general, I find that there is not enough staff support. Things like debriefing hardly ever happen, not to mention checking in on staff members to see how they are holistically doing. It is a big challenge.

Suzanne, sadly what you share here I think is the sentiment of so many HCW’s and often I wonder if this is the reason that we are drawn to the field of palliative care! We identify with the holistic compassionate approach that is so needed but oh so lacking in general care of our patients and each other as colleagues! As you say it is just a “job” too so many nowadays, so it is so important as you say for HR etc. to recognise and implement programmes and protocols that can perhaps start to bring about a change of attitude!
