The most important takeaway from this 9-month children’s palliative care course has been the emphasis on communication. I’ve learned that it’s crucial not to be afraid to speak the truth, but also to be mindful of the tone and sensitivity with which I communicate. Avoiding difficult conversations only leads to more harm for the child and their family. In my practice, I will now prioritize clear, compassionate communication, especially when discussing difficult or uncomfortable topics. In terms of setting up palliative care services at my workplace, I’m considering collaborating with my colleagues to provide comprehensive support for families and create a more structured approach to children’s palliative care. It has really been a pleasure to learn so much in 9 months with Patch SA.
