In paediatric oncology we use the pain scale and the FLACC tools to grade pain. Unfortunately, they are sometimes not used correctly for the correct age groups/developmental stages so the scoring can be misguiding when you see the patient. There is also the unsurety of how often to grade a patients pain. We do so hourly but I know some guidelines say 4 hourly. We do not use the FICA tool but it would be useful in our ward as so many people rely on their faith and relationship with their god to see them through the journey of illness trajectory.

I hope you have found some useful pain and other assessment tools to add to your resources in this course, Sarah. Perhaps some training on the use of assessment tools in your practice would be helpful?
