Cultural Competence refers to one’s ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different to your own.

I have at times found it quite challenging as a reborn Christian who tries to live in a Biblical manner, to work with, or render services to people with opposing beliefs. This is luckily an area within one’s professional journey where there is so much scope for growth, and I can see how I have grown both in tolerance, as well as genuine empathy, towards people of all beliefs and cultures over the years. As long as one is willing to challenge your own prejudices, be open to growth, and learn to implement professional boundaries to safe-guard your own belief system, this can be a very rewarding journey which transforms you into a holistic, neutral and “safe” palliative care practitioner.
