      I think it means to understand, communicate with and interact with people of different cultures – this means learning about different cultures – their practices and developing skills for communication.

      I learn each day new cultural practices that my patients practice – traditional medicine, sometimes a need for certain rituals and I’ve learnt to always ask who is the decision maker in the family and could they come to a family meeting or for counselling. When I am breaking bad news, I’ve found it valuable to ask the caregiver about her religion or spirituality it is more personal to refer to her own religious practices thereafter
