Even without specific trained personal for art – music- or play therapy, it is really so important that children do have an area with toys and some art material. We are a general ward, but we do have sometimes patients staying for weeks, either because of their illness (like TBM) or because of social problems, needing a place of safety, which the social worker struggle to find.
In our old hospital, we were able to have a play room, which would be opened in the mornings and then be closed by around 18.00. We also had a lady, who was a former cleaner, which was paid by donations to take an early childhood education course and to be there with the children to give ideas in play and art.
Unfortunately the lady is not available anymore and the playroom is used now as the resuscitation room, leaving a very small area for the children to play and with no one looking after the toys. This means after a week all the toys are gone or broken, and nothing will happen for 3- 4 months, until one of the doctors starts a new donation round to get toys for the ward again. I think we have to address this problem urgently!
