      Teamwork
Strong teamwork in children’s palliative care means clear communication, mutual respect, and emotional support. In our rehab team (OT, physio, speech therapy, dietetics, social work, psychology, and neurophysiology), we work well together but sometimes find it hard to communicate with some doctors. One thing that really helps us stay connected is that each month, one discipline takes a turn organising something fun for the last two hours of a Friday. It can be as simple as ordering and having milkshakes outside, a games afternoon, or something creative like cookie decorating. These moments help us unwind, debrief informally, and build stronger bonds, which makes a big difference when working in emotionally demanding environments.

      Self-Care
Self-care is vital in this work. I’ve learned that pushing emotions aside isn’t sustainable. Reflecting, talking with trusted colleagues, and making space for informal team connection really helps me cope with the emotional weight of the work. Our monthly fun Fridays have become a valuable form of emotional support.

      Staying Grounded
One thing that helps me stay grounded is spending quiet time cuddling or playing with the children I’m treating. It helps me feel connected to them as people — not just patients — and reminds me why I do this work.
