Palliative care, especially Paediatric palliative care has an extremely negative connotation to it. When people hear the words, they immediately think Death and dying, so why don’t we make it fun?
Hats on for CPC is a fun way to express the lighter side of palliative care, but why not take it further? I’m sure your children has come home numerous times saying they need to dress funny for school, or wear a funny hat or socks, so why not spread awareness for Palliative care while raising some funds to help the cause?
If we approached the schools, shopping centres, local establishments and even police stations in our area, and sold stickers or ribbons (for R5, nothing extravagant) that children and adults could wear on a specific day alongside their funny hat for CPC, we could reach both these goals. It will help spread awareness to the entire community and create a huge talking point about palliative care. We create a Facebook page dedicated to this day where members of the community could post their funny hat and ribbon/sticker pictures and we could crown the “King/Queen of hats” on this same page. It creates a fun and light way to broach the taboo subject of palliative care in our communities, and shows everyone that palliative care isn’t always about death and dying, but about living your best life while you can.
