This concept of Total Pain really resonated with me. I do not have a life-limiting or life-threatening illness, but I suspect that most of us, in our own lives have suffered from heartbreak, Spiritual disquiet, overwork, burnout, existential dilemmas, financial issues, loss and the list goes on. None of us are immune from the challenges of life, and being a health care worker gives us another layer of psychological, emotional and Spiritual challenges. These challenges impact our quality and enjoyment of life.
How much more so then for patients who have the added element of physical pain? Albeit if they are babies, they likely don’t suffer from these issues. However, their parents would no doubt be experiencing the same and and infinitely more heartache and challenges than most of us.
I have met moms and dads who are completely broken and desperate. Their pain cannot be described as anything but TOTAL.
